I am so sorry for your friend and his family and friends. This has got to stop. I'm truly not surprised that crime has risen so fast everywhere in our wonderful country. The people in charge are mislead. Things have got to change. Prayers to you all and the rest of good people everywhere

This is a wonderful testimony to your friend. At the same time it is a valuable word of warning for what happens in a city when the rule of law is abandoned, when criminals are held in higher esteem than the police, and when good people attempt to live a normal life amidst a sea of violence and crime.

Implicit in Kelly's heartfelt article is an important acknowledgment. We rail against the blob of administrative state officials running our lives, and justly so, but the individuals doing those jobs are probably, for the most part, highly dedicated, sincere people who want to make government work better for us citizens. The problem is that we citizens have turned over the running of our lives to this unaccountable group of unelected officials, who despite their dedication, for the most part live in a world quite different from that of most citizens, and should not be the ones making the rules and decisions for which our elected officials are responsible. In the most fundamental sense, they're not qualified. And they will invariably represent the interests of one group of citizens rather than the totality of the nation. They are just plain the wrong people to make those decisions; their resposibility should be only to execute the ones made by our representatives.

Nicely said. From my experience, most career civil servants in the federal government are dedicated to their missions and operate with high integrity. But as the old Greek Proverb goes, "the fish rots from the head first." That is certainly true of the FBI and other intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and true as well elsewhere.
