Thank you for confirming that I'm not nuts - I found it horrifying - he was so angry and divisive... I don't recall many SOTU speeches being like this. They usually throw a bone or two to the other side at least.

Crazy times!

Well said, as usual, Kelly. The speech, both content and delivery, were dreadful. I, too, remember with nostalgia the Reagan speeches -- in fact, just about everything about the Reagan presidency. While the context is clearly very different, Joseph Welch's question to Joe McCarthy comes to mind in response to last night's speech: Have you no sense of decency? As an aside, I'd love to know your reaction to Katie Britt's response.

Thanks, Jade, I generally liked Katie's performance and remarks. She was clearly speaking to suburban moms, an importance audience. I know some are critical and panning her performance, and the emotive transitions were a bit off and too frequent. But she is very talented and a good face to put on the the party. I didn't detect the strong Alabama drawl that I was anticipating!

Ahh, but her use of the very Southern, “bless his heart” was spot on.

Thank you Kelly for another great article. I'm guessing that no one will be seeing Joe today. He's probably feeling a pretty bad hangover from all of the drugs they filled him with last night. So sad for our country

Agree. Most Presidents in their reelection year - I recall Clinton in 1996 - took off for events in key states to bolster projects and points made in the speech. We won't see that from this White House, which I expect will employ a "Rose Garden" strategy. There will be no debate with Donald Trump, I assure you.

Thank you, Kelly, for this walk down memory lane about what a SOTU is supposed to be and bringing back recollections of the best ever given by Reagan. We live in sad times and your ne moniker "HOTU" will continue to resonate until we get this country back on track...if we're fortunate enough to be able to do that!
