1. You wrote, “The Sunflower State, on the other hand, became known as 'Bleeding Kansas' as pro-Union and pro-Confederate marauders poured into the state with violent results.” There was no Confederacy in the 1850s. You should have written, “…anti-slavery and pro-slavery…” instead.
2. You name the 1st Republican presidential candidate as “John C. Freemont.” His name was actually “John C. Frémont.”
You are nitpicking in the extreme. The only change I should have made - considered, given what I was explaining - was "pro-slavery" versus "pro-confederate." Your "Fremont" nitpick . . . really? Over an accent mark? I'm glad I never had you as an editor. But thank you for the kind remark. I confess writing it in something of a hurry, having almost missed the "birthday."
Thanks for the History lesson, I never really knew the background of the Republican Party.
Thanks Kelly!!
I can’t claim to know it that well, either, but it’s never too late to learn.
This is real history from someone who knows the GOP inside out.
William Hamilton, Ph.D.
A couple nits to pick:
Frémont.”
But otherwise a fine essay.
