A Quick Poll
A few questions about which events were worse last week: shooting down a Chinese Communist spy balloon, the State of the Union Address, or the Superbowl theatrics?
The last few days will be remembered for three rather bizarre events, although it may be unfair to include last night’s NFL Superbowl game. While I only watched parts, it was a good game that featured the league’s best teams and quarterbacks.
But there was plenty of woke virtue signaling around it, from playing the so-called “Black National Anthem” (its actual title is “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and it’s been around for a while) to the all-female-piloted US Air Force military flyover. Flyovers have always been our military’s tribute to an iconic American event, but this one had another agenda. And then there were the bizarre elements of the halftime show. I wonder how these events will play out in future years, including the addition of other “anthems.”
As for military flyovers, it would have been nice to have seen a reprise of characters from the movie, “Top Gun: Maverick,” with their Navy pilot counterparts in F-18s. Plenty of diversity and inclusion there. But I can imagine the logistical issues. Arizona’s Luke Air Force Base is much closer to Glendale than Miramar.
Which of the following three events of the week rank as the worst in your opinion?
First, the spectacle of a Chinese surveillance (spy) balloon traversing over parts of Canada and Alaska before slowly meandering over Montana and being spotted by farmers, much to the chagrin of diplomatic officials. They were clearly not interested in the matter becoming public. It captured high-resolution data from an altitude of 60,000 feet over sensitive military and nuclear facilities.
And now, we have vague reports of three more UFOs being shot down over the US and Canada. And now China also doesn’t want to be left out of the fun.
Second, we have the forgettable State of the Union Address. While the Constitution (Article 2, Section 3) requires the president to provide Congress “from time to time” with “information on the State of the Union,” it has become a gaudy spectacle that now features British Parliament-like heckling. Somewhere, our framers are shaking their heads; this is probably not what they had in mind.
And lastly, we have the theatrics and virtue signaling surrounding Sunday night’s football game, including dancers in hazmat suits. My Eagles friends would probably include the game’s officiating.
Wait, I’m forgetting another event - the Grammy Awards. The satanic act of Sam Smith sadly made a bigger impression than the awardees.
February is not off to a great start. Fortunately, it’s our shortest month. We live in interesting times.
