The Controllers vs. the Uncontrollable
A clear-eyed analysis of our choices in this year's presidential election, by former CIA analyst Martin Gurri in The Free Press. A must-read.
The ultimate challenge of every political campaign is to frame the question by which voters will choose - at least the persuadable ones. And sometimes, it's not the candidates or their political parties doing the framing.
This is the most concise framing of an election I've seen since Ronald Reagan in 1980: "There are only two vital forces in American politics today: those who wish to control everything, and those who wish not to be controlled. Reluctantly, I choose the latter."
Former intelligence analyst Martin Gurri sat out the last two elections and remains appropriately critical of Trump, giving him clear-eyed credibility. That this election is even close after four disastrous years underscores how flawed and imperfect Trump is. Still, his record makes him preferable, even the obvious choice, as much as many of us wish we had another one.
Wish I could read that, though it is behind a paywall. I am facing that exact dilemma, and what is making it so hard is the threat to the economy Trump is making on tariffs. I think he would do a better job on the economy than Harris, other than the threat to put high tariff walls at the border. That is a recipe for disaster, one we have tried before and that at a minimum worsened the Great Depression. Why does the Donald always have to make things - like choosing to vote for him - more complicated!! :)
always interesting and informative
